Fashion Forward: Dublin five-star's afternoon tea with a difference

The Westbury has launched a fashion-inspired afternoon tea with a difference, says Pól Ó Conghaile

Get ready to raise those pinkies in appreciation of both food and fashion... thanks to one Dublin five-star's new take on afternoon tea.

This June 7, the Westbury is launching an NCAD Inspired Afternoon Tea - with cakes and pastries inspired by NCAD Fashion students.

Running until mid-September, the tea is available from €55 per person, or from €70pp if you want to go full diva and add sparkling wine or Champagne.

So what kind of treats are available to appreciate... and devour?

An orange ensemble created by Ciara Allen, for example, is influenced a sumptuous pistachio Bavaroise, hazelnut sable, and khalua fluid gel.

Gabrielle Malone’s all-white creation (see gallery), inspired by fishermen’s workwear and equipment, translates as a delicate Verrine made of white chocolate cremeux, passion fruit jelly, white chocolate and coconut-whipped ganache.

Other treats by Executive Pastry Chef Ray Encarnacion take their cues from a black dress by Dora Oduro Newman, a jacket by Elizabeth Omowumi and a poncho by Una King.

The concept comes as afternoon tea enjoys something of a revival in Dublin, with options now ranging from Fusion Tea at Clontarf Castle to the Merrion Hotel's 'Art Tea' and even Vintage Tea Tours on a 1961 Routemaster Bus.

The Doyle Collection, which owns the Westbury along with several hotels in Dublin, Cork, London and Washington DC, is known for its devotion to arts and design.

Its art collection includes works by Irish artists like Patrick Scott and Sir John Lavery, for example, while The Westbury was the official corporate partner to ID2015 (The Year of Irish Design), and has an ongoing relationship with NCAD.

“We are delighted to be collaborating once again with The Westbury to help showcase the incredible wealth of design talent in Ireland," says Angela O’Kelly, Head of Design for Body and Environment at NCAD.

"We are blown away by the skills of the pastry team and how they have captured the very essence of the students’ original designs through the use of different ingredients, developing textures, colours and shapes to rival even the original designs!”
